Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I decide to end my sponsorship?

While we hope that you will make a long-term commitment of at least one year so families can count on support, we realize that circumstances change. If you decide to suspend your sponsorship, we will notify the family and attempt to replace your contribution with that of another sponsor. In the meantime, we will attempt to direct money in our “where the need is greatest” fund towards sustaining the family until we're successful in finding a replacement.

Can I make a one-time donation?

While we'd be happy to receive a one-time donation, we urge donors to consider making a one-year commitment, so the children have a regular source of funds for food and clothes that they can count on. If you donate on a one-time basis, we'll pool your donation in the “where it's needed most” fund so we can raise the amount needed for a child for one year.

How can I know that my donation is well spent?

Families who receive Young Heroes donations will be monitored in several ways. We stay in contact with the local community members who helped us identify families as responsible recipients to enroll. They informally monitor the progress of the family. In addition, the Young Heroes staff makes regular site visits to assess the program directly. If a family is found to be spending their donation unwisely, they are given one warning. If a second violation is found, the family will be dropped from the program.

What is the role of Peace Corps in Young Heroes?

NERCHA asked two Swaziland Peace Corps volunteers, Justin Garland and Steve Kallaugher, to help create the Young Heroes program. After leaving the Peace Corps, Mr. Kallaugher oversaw the implementation of Young Heroes and supervised its first year as a NERCHA employee; he is now president of the Young Heroes Foundation in the United States. Other Peace Corps volunteers who work in rural areas have been active in enrolling orphan families in the program and monitoring how the program works for them.
